Why watch this film?

For his directorial debut, French choreographer Benjamin Millepied (known for Black Swan) opted for an experiment difficult to classify and explain: a melodramatic odyssey of violence and immigration between Mexico and the United States, partly told through dance. The plot follows Carmen (Melissa Barrera, from Scream), a woman forced to flee to the United States in search of a friend of her mother's, when she is murdered. On the way she meets the displaced Marine Aidan (Paul Mescal from Aftersun), and together they are forced to flee. The story does not delve much further than this and, coupled with editing and camera failures, it is difficult to connect with Carmen on an emotional level. However, if you are interested in dance or looking for an interesting film experiment beyond the plot, you might like it. Read more in our full review.
