Plot summary
When Emma, a young New York journalist, returns to her rural hometown for her father's funeral, she quickly begins to suspect that his death was not an accident, but a murder. She and the town Sheriff, a childhood friend, begin to carefully investigate the ever-mounting number of suspects. Competing farmers are fueled by desperation, hunger and poverty. Local gangs run fast and loose, terrorizing the community. Environmental activists are believed to blow up a tracker, or two, for their cause.

Sports can have a transformative effect on people's lives, including those who have experienced great trauma. 'Bennett's War' follows an ex-Afghanistan War soldier who put his life on the line to help a fellow soldier and was discharged after an accident that almost cost him his leg. Back home, he sought out motocross as a path to overcoming and reconnecting with life. It is a modest film, with a tight budget, but it delivers a good story of overcoming, backed by interesting racing sequences that will please motorcycle fans.
Dirt
A movie for fans of the 'Fast & Furious' franchise, of speed or cars. With scenes of pure adrenaline with poisoned machines, 'Dirt' carries the signature of director Alex Ranavirelo, famous precisely for productions involving speed (like 'Ride' and 'Born to Run'). The story is starred by Kevin Dillon (from the series 'Entourage'), who finds himself obligated to work together with a young ex-thief who has talent on the track (played by DeRon Horton, from the series 'White People'). The script is not the strong point of the feature film, but let's be honest, the important thing here is the fun.
Born a Champion
A great movie, especially for those who like martial arts. 'Born a Champion' is the complete package: it has drama, emotion, romance and great fight sequences. In the plot, an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu fighter steps away from everything he loves and enters an illegal MMA tournament. Despite not having the most surprising plot in the world, the story is engaging, cohesive and fulfills its purpose which is entertainment. In addition, the protagonist and screenwriter, Sean Patrick Flanery, is a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu.
I Believe in Santa
If you've ever wondered what would happen if a man reached adulthood still believing in Santa Claus, this Netflix movie is for you. Could this man have a family, form a relationship? And what if his love interest is a woman who hates Christmas? 'I Believe in Santa' is a movie with acting and production values on par with any other Hallmark-style film, but it has the virtue of entertaining with its premise. If you like this type of sugary sweet movie, you'll certainly enjoy it.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
