Why watch this film?
When you sit down to watch Maestro, it's natural to expect a biographical film about Leonard Bernstein, the talented and complex conductor portrayed by Bradley Cooper – who also directs. However, what unfolds in the plot is not something like a typical biopic, but rather a nuanced film about the love between Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan). Slow and contemplative, the feature avoids the pitfalls of turning this story into a melodrama in the style of Marriage Story, subtly presenting the emotions. On the contrary, Cooper leaves much implied so that we, the audience, can feel what is happening and not just observe. Therefore, it's a film that demands a lot from the audience, requiring them to engage with the concept and not find it merely monotonous.

A Star Is Born Encore
An extended version of 'A Star is Born', featuring 12 minutes of new scenes (and singing) with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, expanding the experience for those who enjoyed the cut seen in theaters. It also includes an a cappella version of 'Shallow', which won the Oscar for Best Original Song. It's worth mentioning that, on iTunes, the extended edition is a bonus included in the extras of the original version, available even to those who have already purchased it.
A Star Is Born
This is the fourth remake of the 1930s film, which has previously starred Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand in the lead role. This time, the protagonist is Ally, played by Lady Gaga, a waitress who dreams of a star life until one day she meets Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), a famous singer. From then on, "A Star Is Born" builds, first, a story of overcoming, of pursuit of stardom, and of love. Secondly, the feature brings the tension of Ally's stardom into the relationship of both, involving us in a whirlwind of emotions. An exquisite job by Gaga, who had already acted in productions like "American Horror Story". Cooper is also great - especially when we look at that he is producing, directing, co-starring, and even singing (well). The soundtrack, as it could not be otherwise, is great and deserves special mention to the photography, signed by Matthew Libatique ("Black Swan").

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
