Distraught, agonizing and extremely tense. Darren Aronofsky, from 'Black Swan', delivers an allegorical plot about philosophy, psychology and religion. In 'Mother!' the characters are nameless, which piques the audience's curiosity. The movie's cast is incredible, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris, Michelle Pfeiffer and Domhnall Gleeson, and the big highlight is for Lawrence, who gives her all in the role.

If Mickey Rourke's career seemed to have stalled, like his character's, this Darren Aronofsky film injected new life into it. Aside from all the awards it won - a BAFTA, the Golden Lion at Venice and two Golden Globes, among others - 'The Wrestler' shows a cynical North American society with no place for veterans and old stars.
Black Swan
An intense movie, about a girl pressured by her mother, by her own expectations and by the director, leading her to insanity. Natalie Portman is in an impeccable performance, enhanced by a powerful atmosphere created by Darren Aronofsky's direction. It was indeed deserved the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Actress that Natalie received.
The Whale
Darren Aronofsky ('Mother!', 'Black Swan') is a controversial director. Some love him, others hate him. And 'The Whale', a drama nominated for an Oscar, is likely to intensify this split between opposing sides, with well-defined questions: is it a good movie? Or is it bad? Is it in good taste? Or is it, deep down, in bad taste? 'The Whale' is, after all, a complex film: it's about Charlie (Brendan Fraser, in the role of his life), an English teacher who always seems to see the positive side of things. The obstacle in his life, however, is his weight: over the past few years, Charlie has gained a lot of weight and can no longer get up from the couch, becoming dependent on nurse Liz (Hong Chau). His life is limited as a result. In addition to the difficulty of getting around, being stuck on the couch, there's an element of shame. Charlie doesn't like to be seen. During distance learning classes, he always leaves the camera off, claiming it's broken. Meanwhile, when someone knocks on the door, he usually doesn't interact. The pizza delivery guy, for example, leaves everything at the door, while the money is already in the mailbox. He doesn't want to be seen, in short. Charlie's routine, however, begins to change when Ellie (Sadie Sink) enters (or returns?) to his life. She is the distant daughter of the protagonist, who has a bad relationship with him and with anyone else. She is angry, reactive, and even violent. But not to Charlie, who wants to reconnect with his daughter and correct past mistakes. It's reminiscent of the plot of 'The Wrestler', which also deals with a man who needs to revisit issues of fatherhood. Speaking, then, about friendship, family, and religion, Aronofsky creates a depressive, down-to-earth plot that is emotional. The absolute highlight, however, is Fraser, who is in the role of his career.
Requiem for a Dream
This is possibly the most well-known movie of director Darren Aronofsky, and one of the most representative of early 21st century American cinema. 'Requiem for a Dream' is an hallucinating, intense and claustrophobic journey through its characters' dreams and worst nightmares that will remain with you forever, and it's already a must in any cinephile's repertoire.

Kidnapped
In Kidnapped (Rapito), Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio delves into one of the murkiest and most controversial episodes in the history of the Catholic Church, the "Mortara case". In 1851, when Jewish boy Edgardo Mortara becomes gravely ill, his Catholic nanny decides to baptize him in an emergency. However, papal law dictates that all Catholics must be raised as such, so the cardinal orders the boy to be taken and handed over to the church, against his parents' wishes, who decide to fight for him. The film recounts a controversial case that captured the attention of the rest of Europe and America, and skillfully portrays the clash of interests between the waning power of the church, Mortara's parents, and public opinion, with irreversible consequences for all involved.
Green Border
'Green Border' - In the treacherous and swampy forests that make up the so called “green border” between Belarus and Poland, refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union are trapped in a geopolitical crisis cynically engineered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko. In an attempt to provoke Europe, refugees are lured to the border by propaganda promising easy passage to the EU. Pawns in this hidden war, the lives of Julia, a newly minted activist who has given up her comfortable life, Jan, a young border guard, and a Syrian family intertwine.
