Why watch this film?

No doubt, Jesse Owens is one of the greats in sports and athletics history. At the Berlin Olympics, in front of no one else than Adolf Hitler, Owens, a black man, was awarded gold medals in the 100m, 200m, 4x100m relay, and long jump. This situation angered the Führer, even though he politely greeted the athlete afterwards, and is a landmark in world sports. In this Canadian movie, ‘Race’ (which plays off of the word meaning both “race” and “run”) we get to know Owens’ path, the prejudice he experienced in the US and how the Olympic match unfolded. Despite being superficial and not giving space to the warm reception that the athlete received from some people in Germany, the film is competent – including in the performances.
