After 54 years since the release of the original movie, Mary Poppins is back – now played by Emily Blunt, from ‘A Quiet Place’. The film takes place in London during the Great Depression. Despite the great time difference, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ captures the energy and shine of the previous production, which starred Julie Andrews – only this time with special effects fitting of 21st century Hollywood. In addition to Emily, the cast also includes Lin-Manuel Miranda (actor and composer responsible for Broadway hit ‘Hamilton’), Dick Van Dyke (the original Bert) and Angela Lansbury (Broadway and TV grande dame, known for Broadway musicals and series ‘Murder She Wrote’). The soundtrack had consulting from Richard M. Sherman, co-author of ‘Mary Poppins’ songs.

Memoirs of a Geisha
Based on Arthur Golden's homonymous novel, 'Memoirs of a Geisha' is a period film directed by Rob Marshall ('Chicago'), in which a woman (Zhang Ziyi) tells her story from when she was sold into slavery, to becoming one of the most famous geishas in Japan before the eruption of World War II. While its melodramatically sensitive screenplay can be criticized (and, by extension, the original material), there are good performances from the cast led by Ziyi, accompanied by big names such as Ken Watanabe, Michelle Yeoh and Gong Li. Above all, the visual aspect of the movie is impressive, being worthy of several awards for its cinematography, art direction and costume design (including three Oscars in those categories).
The Little Mermaid
One of the main bets Disney made between 2010 and 2020 is live-action remakes - which are essentially almost literal adaptations of the studio's animated classics. Some results are very bad (like Mulan and The Lion King), many are simply mediocre (Beauty and the Beast, Maleficent) and very few are good, like Aladdin. The Little Mermaid, which tells practically the same story as the 1989 animated original, falls into this middle group: it doesn't have any brilliant musical scenes like Aladdin, despite being directed by one of the big names in the genre (Rob Marshall, from Chicago), but it's not absolutely disastrous either. Much of this is thanks to the good songs we already know from the animated version, but also to Halle Bailey's great performance as the protagonist plus some specific and successful changes, such as a deeper relationship between the princess and her beloved. It's a movie that won't change you (and may even make you want to watch the animated version), but its story is moving anyway.

Robot Dreams
Sometimes we get so carried away by the marketing power of studios like Disney Pixar, and we overlook other avenues for deep and powerful animated stories that don't need excessively complex plots to evoke emotions. Such is the case with Robot Dreams, a Hispanic-French production directed by Pablo Berger (2012’s Snow White), based on the eponymous graphic novel by Sara Varon. Set in New York during the 80s, the story follows Dog, whose solitary life leads him to buy a robot for companionship. Their friendship grows, but an unfortunate day at the beach forces them to separate and long for the day of their reunion. Virtually without dialogue, with vibrant animation and a captivating visual language, the film tells a simple yet profoundly moving story about (curiously) human relationships and the course they take despite (or because of) accidents, fortuitous circumstances, and uncontrollable events that happen throughout life.
