Why watch this film?

Is there a work more representative of modern French ideals of justice, morality, and law than Victor Hugo's 'Les Misérables'? Probably not, so it's no coincidence that director Ladj Ly borrows the title for this dramatic film, based on his short. Inspired by the riots in Parisian suburbs of 2005 and winner of the Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, 'Les Misérables' reclaims that spirit of struggle and applies it to contemporary France: inflamed, unequal, and divided by poverty, police brutality, and marked by ethnic and religious prejudice.
