"Belén is an Argentine legal drama directed and co-starring actress Dolores Fonzi (her second feature film as a director after Blondi), inspired by the book Somos Belén by Ana Correa, which recounts the unjust case of a woman tried and imprisoned in the Tucumán region, accused of homicide for what was actually a miscarriage. The film reconstructs the case and also reveals, on one hand, the conservative society that made this injustice possible; on the other hand, the fervent activism of the progressive opposition. It’s a well-directed legal drama by Fonzi that brings us closer to a case that later led to significant transformation in Argentine legislation. The only downside is that its narrative focuses more on the perspective of the lawyer who handled the case, Soledad Deza (played by Fonzi in the film), rather than the victim herself. However, it’s still a story that needs to be known."
