Why watch the movie Wild Diamond?
"Wild Diamond is a French film by debuting director Agathe Riedinger, which competed in the main selection at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival (curiously, in the same section where Anora would win the Palme d'Or). The plot follows Liane (Malou Khebizi), a young woman living in the margins of southern France with her mother and younger sister, who dreams of becoming famous and loved by everyone. The opportunity comes when she auditions for a reality show called Miracle Island, but her beauty and stardom aspirations become increasingly destructive. This film addresses the hypersexualization of women as a weapon in an environment where there are no other options for them, with the psychological and social traps it entails. However, Riedinger’s perspective remains compassionate throughout, offering a slightly more critical view of the sexualization of women than Anora does. "
Our suggestions
"The first of four female-directed films competing for the Palme d’Or this year, Wild Diamond portrays hyperfemininity and hypersexualization as a weapon—often flawed—for girls with no prospects. Whether in the South of France (like the protagonist), Brazil, or India, their struggles are universal. Read the full article from our special coverage of Cannes 2024."
