Liane, 19 years old, daring and fiery, lives with her mother and little sister under the dusty sun of Fréjus in the South of France. Obsessed with beauty and the need to become “someone”, she sees reality TV as her opportunity to be loved… Fate smiles upon her when she auditions for “Miracle Island”.
"Wild Diamond is a French film by debuting director Agathe Riedinger, which competed in the main selection at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival (curiously, in the same section where Anora would win the Palme d'Or). The plot follows Liane (Malou Khebizi), a young woman living in the margins of southern France with her mother and younger sister, who dreams of becoming famous and loved by everyone. The opportunity comes when she auditions for a reality show called Miracle Island, but her beauty and stardom aspirations become increasingly destructive. This film addresses the hypersexualization of women as a weapon in an environment where there are no other options for them, with the psychological and social traps it entails. However, Riedinger’s perspective remains compassionate throughout, offering a slightly more critical view of the sexualization of women than Anora does. "
