Also set in the Mixteca, but with a greater emphasis on rural nature, the film is a drama seen through the lens of childhood: the title character (Danae Ahuja Aparicio) is a cheerful nine-year-old girl whose life takes a turn when her father dies in an accident. It’s a fact that she will struggle to acknowledge and that will create friction with her family, but she will find meaning by taking refuge in nature. It is a small, sensitive, yet very powerful Mexican drama that discovers transformative magic even in the most mundane moments, with Cruz’s firm direction and excellent performances from the cast."
