Why watch this film?
Dé, Adrianim and Martins are three black teenagers from Chatuba, Rio de Janeiro. When Dé receives the news that Almerinda, his grandmother, is in the terminal phase of Alzheimer’s disease, he decides to enjoy the last days of her life together with his two best friends.
""Kasa Branca" is a candid snapshot of real life: a universal and heartwarming tale of generational bonds; of partnership, care, and love among friends and family, and representation. Premiered at the Rio de Janeiro Int'l Film Festival 2024, this Brazilian production offers a fresh perspective on Black narratives, different from what we're used to seeing on screen—avoiding stereotypes and choosing to highlight diverse viewpoints and stories within the Rio de Janeiro favela. Based on true events, the story follows young Dé (Big Jaum), who lives with his grandmother (Teca Pereira) and strives to fulfill the matriarch's last wishes as she faces terminal Alzheimer's. At the same time, he needs to look after her basic needs and hustle for money to cover medication and rent. To make it happen, he leans on his inseparable friends (Diego Francisco, Ramon Francisco, and Gi Fernandes), who also have an unconditional love for Dé's grandmother. Director Luciano Vidigal ("City of God – 10 Years Later"), who also penned the script, delivers a heartfelt story packed with drama and comedy, shedding light on everyday people seeking ways to stay alive in the memories of those around them."
