Why watch this film?
Based on a true story, this drama follows three pioneering British scientists in the '60s and '70s and their struggle to develop IVF — against all odds.
"JOY is a British biographical drama about one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs of the 20th century: the development of in vitro fertilization and the eventual birth of Louise Joy Brown by this method in 1978. The film not only depicts the scientific development of this assisted reproduction method but also the incredible wave of controversy it provoked, generating rejection from the conservative community and exposing the double standard surrounding motherhood, the desire for a child, or the inability to have one – which might show that, while we’ve made progress in some areas as a society, things are still quite similar today in others. As a drama, it’s somewhat conventional for such an extraordinary story, but it’s undeniably emotional due to the performances of its lead trio: Bill Nighy, Thomasin McKenzie, and James Norton."
