Why watch this film?
An emotive journey of a former school teacher, who writes letters for illiterate people, and a young boy, whose mother has just died, as they search for the father he never knew.
"'Central do Brasil' is one of the greatest films - if not the greatest - in the history of Brazilian cinema, showing a moment of transition in the country, already quite urban, but still with its rural origins. It is also the portrait of a time that now seems like a distant past, in which the letter still had a fundamental weight in the communication of families. All this is a backdrop to tell a story about an unlikely relationship between a retired teacher who has lost hope in life and a recently orphaned boy in search of his family. The result is a touching and engaging film, with a masterful performance by Fernanda Montenegro - who was nominated for an Oscar (the first Latin American and only Brazilian to receive such an honor), the Golden Globe and won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival. The feature was also nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Film, crowning the great work of director Walter Salles ('Behind the Sun') and the photography of Walter Carvalho ('Arcadian Landscape')."
