During the mid-August celebrations, two papier-mâché equestrian statues, over eight meters high, travel the streets of the city of Messina, from Camaro to the Town Hall. The statues are made of hollow wood inside and represent the "giants" Mata and Grifone. Although there is no certain date, the origins of the statues are linked to a history dating back to the mid-10th century and perhaps they were built to celebrate more ancient origins.
