Star Trek and Doctor Who have crossed over several times, but a substantial coming together in live-action is not something that's been achieved for the two long-running sci-fi franchises. Instead, they've been limited to non-canonical (but fun) crossovers in things like comic books and mobile games. That being said, recent years have made it feel more possible than ever. One of the fun ideas they had was to make Pelia (Carol Kane), the USS Enterprise's chief engineer on "Strange New Worlds," one of the Doctor's previous time-traveling companions. This was even teased in the "Strange New Worlds" episode "New Life and New Civilizations," where Pelia noted,

Starfleet Academy Season 2 Casts Actor Bill Nighy as Holly Hunter’s Estranged Father

Star Trek has always known the quickest way to make a starship captain human: send in a parent. Starfleet Academy, heading into its last semester, has reached for that oldest lever. Most of the coverage out of New York Comic Con filed the news as one more guest-star bulletin. Read beside the franchise’s own family history, it says something more pointed about where the final season is headed. Rosemarie DeWitt was announced in the same breath as Laytha Sadal,
