‘The Cat in the Hat’ Review: Bill Hader Leads an Animated Dr. Seuss Comedy So Overstuffed It’s Like a Marvel Movie for Tots

When it came to devising the voice he would use for “Lincoln,” Daniel Day-Lewis spent months working out the precise timbre and inflection and rhythm of how he imagined Abraham Lincoln might have sounded. All of which got me to thinking about the voice Daniel Day-Lewis might have used to play the Cat in the Hat. Reading the Dr. Seuss books as a kid, I always imagined the Cat in the Hat sounding vaguely aristocratic, a touch effete, with the edgy attitude of a blithe troublemaker. He was consciously obnoxious, though part of it is that he knew there was nothing really wrong with the mischief he was making. It was what every kid wanted and needed. We’ll never know how Daniel Day-Lewis would have voiced the Cat in the Hat. But I’m pretty sure that if he took on the role, he’d have made the Cat more spiky and audacious,

Robopocalypse | The lost Steven Spielberg AI sci-fi movie

Steven Spielberg was announced as bringing the book Robopocalypse to the screen over ten years ago. Er, things didn’t go to plan. Cinema is not short of books seemingly impossible to adapt to the screen being, well, adapted for the screen. Look at William S Burrough’s Naked Lunch, that David Cronenberg steered to the screen – albeit not slavishly in the early 1990s. Or maybe Max Brooks’ World War Z, a book of dispatches from a zombie war that got turned into a relatively sanitised Brad Pitt blockbuster (grossing over $500m worldwide after a very troubled production.) Sometimes, though, seemingly unadaptable books prove just that, and Daniel H Wilson

‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Director Martin Scorsese Reveals His Angelina Jolie ‘Cleopatra’ Was Derailed by the Sony Hack

Hollywood is full of ambitious projects that never reached the screen, but few sound as tantalizing as a Martin Scorsese ‘Cleopatra’ epic. The idea of one of cinema’s greatest directors tackling the story of Egypt’s last pharaoh, with Angelina Jolie in the lead, has hovered over the industry for years. Now the filmmaker has offered a candid look at just how close it came to happening. The ‘Cleopatra’ project had a long and tangled history at Sony, where Jolie had been attached to a big-budget version of the story. It was widely known in the industry that the studio wanted her to star in an expensive historical epic.

Elsinore - Paul Risker - 20595

In September 1989, Daniel Day-Lewis was on stage playing Hamlet at the National Theatre, London, and then he was not. Shocking the audience that evening, the actor, during a scene in which Hamlet is confronted by the ghost of his father, walked off-stage. He collapsed backstage and has never walked the boards of the stage again. What happened that evening has become one of theatre’s great anecdotes, fuelled by Day-Lewis’ own response that suggested he saw the ghost of his own father. More than 10 years later, in an interview, he told The Guardian: “I had to leave the stage because I was an empty vessel. I had nothing in me,

Austin Abrams Has Had an Autumn From Hell. It’s Made Him a Star

Before he was swallowed by one in Whalefall, Austin Abrams flew to Dominica to see a sperm whale up close. Posted up on a boat in the turquoise waters off Nature’s Isle, he watched as pods of the slick, gray beasts drifted by the bobbing boat. “This probably sounds silly, but making a whole movie about these kinds of whales, it felt just strange not to have an interaction with one,” Abrams says. “It makes you realize they’re not animals. They have the same essence of a person,
