Martin McDonagh has a type, and that type is two grumpy men stuck somewhere beautiful with nothing to do but wound each other with words. ‘Wild Horse Nine’ sends John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell to Easter Island in 1973 as a pair of CIA agents on what is supposedly a vacation. Chile is months away from a military coup, and these two know exactly what is coming because they helped set it up. Malkovich plays Chris, an aging operative with terminal cancer, a wandering mind, and a habit of blurting out secrets in public. The Making of ‘Wild Horse Nine’ and the Story Behind It

Anyone wondering what ‘Wild Horse Nine’ is based on will find that the film traces back to its creator rather than to a book or a documented historical case. Martin McDonagh is credited as both writer and director, and the published credits name no source novel or true account. It is an original screenplay built around a real historical moment. Shortly before the 1973 Chilean coup, CIA agents Chris and Lee are sent from Santiago to Easter Island by their bureau chief, Mj. That premise gives ‘Wild Horse Nine’ a precise historical frame while leaving McDonagh free to invent the characters, the mission and the tone that surrounds them. An Original

‘Wild Horse Nine’ Earns Fresh Praise on Rotten Tomatoes, and Critics Say Martin McDonagh’s CIA Comedy Is a Double Act for the Ages

Martin McDonagh has never been a filmmaker who goes quietly. From ‘In Bruges’ to ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ to ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, his films pair razor-sharp dialogue with unexpectedly raw emotion. His latest, ‘Wild Horse Nine’, arrives with the weight of that reputation and a spy-comedy premise built for his style. The film comes at an interesting moment for McDonagh. His last two features earned Best Picture and screenplay nominations, along with a combined seven acting nominations that yielded two wins. That track record has made ‘Wild Horse Nine’ one of the most closely watched titles of the fall awards season. Now the critics have weighed in, and the verdict is strongly positive.
