‘The Greatest’ Review: Jaalen Best Gives a Star-Making Performance in Amazon’s Uneven but Impressive Muhammad Ali Series

There’s something amusing about Amazon and creator Ben Watkins casting relatively unknown Jaalen Best as the lead in the synonymously eponymous new series The Greatest, as if Jon Hamm were cast in a series about a 16th-century English philosopher titled simply Bacon. It’s also appropriate because Best turns out to be the, well, best reason to watch The Greatest, taking on the mammoth challenge of embodying burgeoning boxing legend Cassius Clay on the brink of his transformation into Muhammad Ali. Clay/Ali remains one of the most indelible personalities of the 20th century, a man whose every public utterance and movement have become the subject of adoration and imitation. That Best captures Clay’s spirit in a way that’s instantly recognizable but rarely just mimicry is a remarkable achievement, especially for an actor this young faced with a task this daunting. Best is not, however, the only reason to watch The Greatest.

Clint Eastwood’s Best Movie of 2010s With Olivia Wilde Officially Lands on Netflix

Clint Eastwood spent the 2010s directing many true stories. From a sniper in a war to three young Americans on a train stopping a terrorist attack to an 87-year-old dr*g mule, Eastwood covered them all. However, the best of the decade remains his movie based on the Centennial Olympic Park Bombing, Richard Jewell, and it is out now on Netflix. The film stars Paul Walter Hauser, Olivia Wilde, Jon Hamm, Sam Rockwell, and Kathy Bates in lead roles. While Eastwood’s last few movies have been a hit or a miss, Richard Jewell brought back the filmmaker’s penchant for empathetic portrayals of true-blue American lives, amidst a larger-than-life incident.

‘American Hostage’ Episode 8 Finale Recap and Ending Explained: Fred Heckman is Left Paying for the Lie That Saved Two Lives

Few true-crime dramas have the nerve to end by asking whether a good outcome can still feel like a failure, but the ‘American Hostage‘ finale ending does exactly that. After 8 episodes of live-radio tension, ‘Break the Bank’ closed out the MGM+ series on November 1 with a resolution that is practical, messy and deliberately uncomfortable. The show dramatizes the 1977 Indianapolis standoff in which Tony Kiritsis (Giovanni Ribisi) held mortgage broker Dick Hall (Kristoffer Polaha) at gunpoint, with a wire running from Hall’s neck to a shotgun trigger. Radio news director Fred Heckman (Jon Hamm) became the voice Tony trusted, even as the immunity deal Fred helped sell turned out to be fake.
