‘Being Heumann’ Review: Siân Heder’s ‘Coda’ Follow-Up Is an Essential Biopic That’s Not Afraid to Have Some Fun

[Editor’s note: This review was originally published on September 10, 2026 during the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. Apple will release the film in select theaters on Friday, November 6 and on Apple TV on Friday, November 13.] When Siân Heder’s “Coda” premiered at Sundance in 2021 (during the festival’s online-only “pandemic year” and months and months before the film would go on to win Best Picture), it became an early favorite of mine. Mostly, I wrote in my review, though the “drama is marked by familiar beats, its characters bring new dimension to a staid genre.” The same can be said about Heder’s follow-up feature, “Being Heumann,” which brings real life back to the biopic, not only through innumerable compelling characters, but the smart choice to tightly focus this story on one essential moment in the life of the activist Judy Heumann. When we first meet Judy (Ruth Madeley in a true star turn), she’s zipping along a busy New York City street in 1972. That might sound fun,

‘Wild Horse Nine’ Earns Fresh Praise on Rotten Tomatoes, and Critics Say Martin McDonagh’s CIA Comedy Is a Double Act for the Ages

Martin McDonagh has never been a filmmaker who goes quietly. From ‘In Bruges’ to ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ to ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’, his films pair razor-sharp dialogue with unexpectedly raw emotion. His latest, ‘Wild Horse Nine’, arrives with the weight of that reputation and a spy-comedy premise built for his style. The film comes at an interesting moment for McDonagh. His last two features earned Best Picture and screenplay nominations, along with a combined seven acting nominations that yielded two wins. That track record has made ‘Wild Horse Nine’ one of the most closely watched titles of the fall awards season. Now the critics have weighed in, and the verdict is strongly positive.

Martin McDonagh’s ‘Wild Horse Nine’ Earns Rotten Tomatoes’ Seal of Approval Ahead of Theatrical Release

Martin McDonagh has built a reputation on sharp, darkly funny films like ‘In Bruges’, ‘Seven Psychopaths’ and ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’. His latest, ‘Wild Horse Nine’, has been one of the most talked-about titles on the festival circuit this fall. The black comedy thriller premiered in the main competition at the Venice International Film Festival in September, where John Malkovich won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. It then had its North American premiere at Telluride and also screened at San Sebastián, building strong awards buzz along the way. With just days to go before it opens in theaters, the film has hit another milestone. ‘Wild Horse Nine’ is

Being Heumann Review: An Admirably Unusual Approach For a Triumphalist Crowd-Pleaser

Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2026 TIFF coverage. The film arrives in theaters on November 6 and on Apple TV+ on November 13. Sian Heder’s Oscar winner Coda felt like a movie out of time. It was the kind of broad crowd-pleaser that Miramax would have released to awards success a couple of decades earlier, which I would argue only triumphed with the Academy as voters were quietly nostalgic for the kind of American indie that disappeared alongside the Weinsteins. It certainly didn’t hold up to scrutiny as a lived-in, authentic account of the deaf community, with its simplistic and reductive attempt to chronicle their many
