Under Her Control is a chilly power study that admires its own setup too long

Under Her Control opens on something that sounds like kindness. A young woman at a fashion house believes a pregnancy will end a career that has barely begun, and her boss, instead of letting her go, offers to adopt the child. On paper it is a rescue. But when the person who controls your job, your money and your future offers help, you have to ask what she is buying, and the film keeps asking it for most of its running time. Fran Torres, in his first feature, builds a slow drama with a thriller running underneath. The Spanish title, La jefa, means The Boss, and it states the subject

Go Team! Review: Corporate Teamwork Meets the Threat of Unemployment

Corporate language has a peculiar talent for making threats sound therapeutic. Layoffs become restructuring. Surveillance becomes accountability. A rural retreat where employees compete for the privilege of remaining employed can therefore arrive wrapped in the vocabulary of teamwork and professional growth without anybody in management apparently noticing the joke. Go Team! notices it immediately. Tío Mochales, once a successful Spanish cheese company, has fallen on difficult times. Its employees are sent to the village associated with the company’s origins for what appears to be an exercise in reconnecting with shared values. Then the actual purpose emerges. Jobs are at risk, the activities are competitive, and colleagues who arrived expecting

Go Team! on Netflix turns a company retreat into a scramble to survive the layoffs

There is a strain of Spanish comedy that treats the workplace as a pressure cooker and waits, without blinking, for the lid to go. Go Team! belongs to it. The film — released internationally under that English title, and called Gracias, equipo at home — takes a fading, family-built cheese company named Tío Mochales and marches its staff off to a rural retreat in the village where the firm began, sold to everyone as a weekend to reconnect with the company’s founding values. Then the word slips out that layoffs are coming, and the trust exercises stop being exercises. It arrives on Netflix as a black comedy with a bench of
