Russell Crowe: Why ‘Les Misérables’ Vocals Had to Be Live

Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Russell Crowe was no stranger to singing when he took on the role of Inspector Javert in the 2012 movie Les Misérables. He’d been performing with rock bands for years, but singing on a movie set was another matter, especially when director Tom Hooper decided to do things a little differently. Usually, actors making a movie musical record their songs in a studio before filming. When they get in front of the cameras, they’re performing along with the finished recordings. Hooper wasn’t interested in that approach. He wanted his actors to sing during their scenes, capturing the vocals as the performances happened.

Taylor Sheridan’s 122-Minute Crime Thriller Officially Hits 30-Day Streaming Milestone

Ridley Scott's Last Historical Epic With Russell Crowe Officially Hits Prime Video

Over the course of a decade, Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe worked together on half a dozen movies. Some, like Gladiator, were runaway critical and commercial hits, while others, like A Good Year, barely registered. The partnership came to an abrupt end exactly a decade after it began. In recent years, both Crowe and Scott have taken shots at each other, mainly on the subject of Gladiator II. The long-gestating sequel finally debuted in 2024, but Crowe wasn't involved. Scott reasoned that Crowe's character was dead, while the actor, who won an Oscar for his performance in the first film, said that he worked on a version where he could have returned.

Russell Crowe's ‘Godfather’-Style Crime Thriller Officially Lands on Streaming

Director Ridley Scott has implied over the years that working with Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington isn't easy. While he hasn't done a movie with Crowe since 2010's Robin Hood, he recently worked with Washington on Gladiator II. Washington developed a close friendship with Scott's late brother Tony Scott, with whom he worked on memorable films such as Unstoppable, Man on Fire, and Crimson Tide. However, both Washington and Crowe starred together in a two-hander directed by Ridley Scott that's about to turn 20 years old. The movie in question was recently added to the Starz library, giving younger audiences an opportunity to check it out. Released theatrically in 2007, the film
