Why watch this film?
Not all of Chinese modern cinema is made up of big-budget wuxia productions. 'Ma ma he qui Tian de shi Jian' is a small, introspective drama written and directed by Dongmei Li, telling the story of what happened in a small village in the Chinese countryside during the summer of 1992. Featuring non-actors, the production brings a different view than the urban vision we are used to seeing from the country in recent years. The end result is an ode to simplicity, with beautiful scenery and a slow pace - showing that there is beauty in the mundane.
