"Swallow" is a cinematic adaptation of a book written by Nigerian-American author, playwright, and screenwriter Sefi Atta. The production speaks about drug trafficking in Nigeria in the 1980s. Atta, who was responsible for the script, joins director Kunle Afolayan ("A Lesson from Moremi") to bring this story to Netflix. In the plot, we follow a woman who had harsh consequences in her life after getting involved in drug trafficking. Very well directed and contextualized film, great for those who don't know Nigerian cinema and a good entry point.

'Citation' is a Nigerian production based on facts that puts this discussion in vogue in a different culture than ours. Even so, it ends up being a reflection of how much society has evolved, women still face the same problems and their voices are always overshadowed by a man. The movie is extremely relevant and there is an uneasiness as the plot unfolds. It's as if the director was calling you to fight against the abuses suffered by women all over the world.
A Naija Christmas
"A Naija Christmas" is the first Nigerian Christmas movie on Netflix. Directed by Kunle Afolayan, the same director of "A Lesson of Moremi", the story follows a mother's Christmas wish which ends up creating a fierce competition between her children - who are only looking for the financial reward. A great production to learn about Christmas traditions from other regions of the world and with a message that is universal. We know that the end of the year always carries a greater dose of hope and this feeling is present in the movie, as well as love for one another and striving for fewer material things.

After the success of "A Christmas Wife" which premiered on Netflix in 2021, director Kunle Afolayan is back on streaming with "Anikulapo". This time, the filmmaker takes on a fantasy story that follows a man who gets a second chance at life after being murdered. The mystical folkloric drama follows the life of Saro (Kunle Remi) who now has the power of resurrection which earned him the name Anikulapo. The story is quite intriguing, especially for showing the folklore of Nigerian culture, as well as the aesthetics of the film. Kunle Afolayan does a great job directing and the cast also delivers great performances.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.

'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
