After all, the sisters became a phenomenon in the sport and beyond, with two black women at the top of one of the most elite and white sports practices in the world. Certainly this story deserved a movie - and in 'King Richard: Creating Champions', we are introduced to the great responsible for their success, their father. Without Richard Williams (played in the feature by Will Smith), the lives of Venus (Saniyya Sidney) and Serena (Demi Singleton) might have been very different. He projected the entire career of his daughters before they were even born, and never gave up on the plan - which yielded two millionaire champions. On screen, the result of this journey is the typical sports movie that has the face of the awards season. Will Smith, no doubt, should be nominated for several awards, with a version of Richard that escapes the roles we are seeing the actor. Smith, who should have won an Oscar long ago, moves us and also makes us angry as the demanding father of the athletes. In addition to him, the great revelation of the movie is Saniyya Sidney ('Extraordinary Powers') as Venus Williams: the young actress lights up all the scenes that appear and really shows all the will that the tennis player had in her youth. Despite the clichéd format of sports production, 'King Richard' is a very important movie, mainly for showing a happy story starring Afro-descendants.

Joe Bell
If you stop to look, 'Joe Bell' is a movie full of mistakes. Screened at the Toronto Festival, the feature film has a forced dramatic arc, some rather tacky twists and Mark Wahlberg is not exactly a bastion of goodness to play the role of a father who crosses the United States to educate children not to practice bullying -- after all, he has already been accused of racist insults. In addition, Joe Bell's speeches are not exactly motivating, as one might expect. However, even so, screenwriters Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry (from 'Brokeback Mountain's Secret') manage to bring a little poetry to the story of this father hurt by prejudice that his son suffers for being openly gay. The message is a bit twisted and the development pitiful. But still, you can understand the pain of this character so atypical in Wahlberg's career, marked by the great action franchises. It is a movie that is important to see and understand the mistakes in order to access the tortuous journey of this so incomprehensible character.
Bob Marley: One Love
Bob Marley: One Love is a movie for fans. After all, this feature film directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (of the award-winning King Richard) is not exactly concerned with telling a story with a clear goal and an emotional climax, but rather with stacking various important moments in the life of the Jamaican musician, such as the assassination attempt on his life, the success he began to achieve when he was in Europe, his relationship with Rastafarianism, and the like. Kingsley Ben-Adir's performance (One Night in Miami) is well above average, and better than the rest of the entire film, but it's not enough to save it. There are still more evident problems here. Nevertheless, Bob Marley: One Love should thrill fans of the Jamaican, who will enjoy seeing the singer's fleeting trajectory.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
