Why watch this film?

Sebastian Padilla's debut feature film, Muerte al Verano, is an atypical mix of influences for Mexican cinema: a cocktail of metal culture, otaku and gamer with a sour romantic plot, a dark almost nihilistic humor and an aesthetic inspired by anime, filtered through the context of violence in Nuevo Leon (in Northern Mexico). The story follows a disoriented teenager named Dante (Yojath Okamoto), who spends his days playing card games and playing death metal with his friends, with the idea of competing in a bands war. Things get complicated when Lucy (Ana Valeria Becerril, from Las hijas de Abril) appears, his brother's comatose girlfriend, whom he starts to develop feelings for. Selected at the 2019 Morelia Film Festival and nominated for an Ariel 2022 award for Best First Feature Film.

Plot summary

Death to the summer deals with the loss of dreams and innocence, where small battles like the heartbreak of first love or the stage fright before your first gig, carry such a heavy burden on its characters and their chaotic world. It's a story told from a teenager's point of view, in a violent and dying city where there's still room for hope.
