Mexican filmmaker Jorge Michel Grau's debut feature is one of the most impactful and memorable debuts in contemporary national cinema. Just as George A. Romero did with zombie films in his time, 'We Are What We Are' takes on the violence perpetrated by cannibalism to comment on marginalization and family dynamics in Mexico, with healthy doses of macabre humor. It may turn your stomach, but it's a cult classic-worthy film due to its theme, aesthetic, and great cast featuring Paulina Gaitán (now known for films like 'Niñas bien' or TV series 'Diablo Guardián'), alongside renowned Mexican actors like Daniel Giménez Cacho ('Zama', 'Solo con tu pareja') and Jorge Zárate ('El infierno').
Perdida
Presented at the 17th Morelia International Film Festival, 'Perdida' is a Mexican remake of the successful 2011 Colombian film 'La cara oculta.' This new version is directed by Mexican filmmaker Jorge Michel Grau ('Somos lo que hay'), backed by a solid cast that includes José María de Tavira ('Rosario Tijeras'), Cristina Rodlo ('Too Old to Die Young', 'The Terror') and Colombian Paulina Dávila ('Aquí en la Tierra'). The result is an exciting and modest, but very well-directed thriller between police and psychological, in which discord and lust are the rule of the game.

Como el mar is an Argentine film where a young woman, Azul (Zoe Hochbaum), discovers that her supposed older sister (Sofía Gala Castiglione) is actually her biological mother, and the mother who has just died was really her grandmother. Seeking answers about her father, they embark on a journey to Uruguay, where they must transform their bond. This road movie moves at a slow, contemplative pace, focusing more on exploring feelings than events, which may seem too simplistic for those looking for complex dramas. However, it's an emotional film, and the performance of the legendary Carmen Maura (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown) is definitely worth watching.
My First Film
Many filmmakers spend their lives trying to sustain their creative careers, unaware of their missteps. In My First Film, the debut feature of director Zia Anger (who has created videos for artists like Mitski and Beach House), we see the opposite: a filmmaker who looks back and reconstructs what went wrong in her disastrous first attempt when she was younger. Past and present blend with reality and fiction (featuring artists like Odessa Young), in a film that recreates not just events but emotions. There are many meta and revisionist films, but My First Film is the most fascinating since 2018's Shirkers, at the very least.
