Mixed-race childhood friends reunite in middle class adulthood and become increasingly involved in each other's lives and insecurities. While Irene identifies as African-American and is married to a Black doctor, Clare "passes" as white and has married a prejudiced, wealthy white man.
"Rebecca Hall's directorial debut, 'Passing', tells a very powerful story about racist society. Set in the 1920s, the plot revolves around the lives of two black women - but one of them passes as white, and her relationship with society is completely different from the other. Rebecca Hall and cinematographer Eduard Grau (‘Suffragette’) were very astute in choosing black and white to show all the shades of this narrative, which is particularly special. It is a beautiful film in every sense and works as a true representation of racial identity combined with very well-intentioned cinematography."
