Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s career from a child singing in her father’s church’s choir to her international superstardom, ' Respect' is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice.

"Jennifer Hudson takes on the role of one of music's legends, Aretha Franklin, in this movie. The highly anticipated biopic of the singer shows Aretha's childhood to stardom, in a life that wasn't easy - and the film touches on these themes, including issues with her father, early pregnancy, absent mother and an abusive husband. Much of the artist's music reflects these problems she faced - although her repertoire brought many lyrics from other composers, Aretha adapted them the best she could to her reality. 'Respect' is Liesl Tommy's feature film debut, who has worked on series such as 'Insecure' and 'Jessica Jones'. Maybe that's why the filmmaker ends up bringing a narrative that would work better in a series, since it addresses many issues without being able to develop them properly. Jennifer Hudson shines on the screen, but could stand out even more if it weren't for the confusing script. Other performances that deserve mention are Marlon Wayans as Ted White, Forest Whitaker as C. L. Franklin, and Marc Maron as Jerry Wexler."
