Alegría

"Alegría is a dramatic comedy from Spanish director Violeta Salama (Días Mejores), featured at the Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG) in Mexico, and even starring renowned Mexican actress Cecilia Suárez (Blue Eyelids). The film follows Alegría, a woman who has rejected her Jewish roots, making things difficult when her family comes to organize her niece's traditional Jewish wedding. To help her cope, she relies on her best friend and Moroccan housekeeper, who come from Christian and Muslim backgrounds respectively. Their interactions highlight differences, common grounds—particularly a pervasive misogyny regardless of religion—and what unites them. The film may be somewhat bland, but it's moving and interesting due to the diverse backgrounds of its characters."
