Coen Brothers Bring Laughs to Lumière Award Ceremony as Javier Bardem Recalls ‘No Country for Old Men’: ‘They Gave Me One Masterpiece’

To the sound of the Gipsy Kings’ Spanish-language rendition of “Hotel California,” Joel and Ethan Coen took the stage at Lyon’s Lumière Film Festival on Friday evening to receive the Lumière Award, celebrating four decades of filmmaking with a characteristically irreverent tribute to the inventors of cinema. “Thank you to the Lumières for inventing the movie camera, or we’d have been fucked,” joked Ethan, drawing laughs from the audience. The musical choice itself was a nod to the Coens’ cult comedy “The Big Lebowski,” featuring John Turturro’s flamboyant bowler Jesus Quintana. The star-studded gathering included Javier Bardem, Frances McDormand, former Lumière prize winner Wim Wenders, Robert Eggers, Michel Hazanavicius and Bérénice Bejo, Benoît Magimel, Antoine de Caunes and Caleb Deschanel, in town for a masterclass and the premiere of Laika’s upcoming stop-motion animated feature “Wildwood.” Accepting the award, Joel reflected on four decades of filmmaking with his brother.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to “De Gaulle,” Antonin Baudry’s sprawling two-part historical epic that premiered out of competition at Cannes and was just shortlisted to represent France in the Oscar race. The distributor is planning a U.S. theatrical release in November or December 2026 for the €70 million ($82 million) production, which chronicles Charles de Gaulle’s rise as the face of the French resistance during World War II. Produced by Pathé, “De Gaulle” has already grossed $48 million from more than 5.6 million admissions in France, becoming one of the year’s biggest box office hits thanks mainly to word-of-mouth. Directed by Baudry, whose credits include submarine thriller “The Wolf’s Call,” “De Gaulle” begins in June 1940, as the

Baudry builds De Gaulle: Résistance around a general with no army and one radio broadcast

A country has just signed away its own war, and one middle-ranking general decides the surrender does not bind him. That is the whole engine of Antonin Baudry’s De Gaulle: Résistance, and its nerve is to treat a founding national legend as something closer to a thriller of isolation. Here is a man with no army, no mandate and almost no allies, gambling that a voice carried on a foreign broadcaster can outlast a document signed at home. Baudry, adapting Julian Jackson’s biography with Bérénice Vila, builds the film around that vacuum of authority rather than around any battlefield. His de Gaulle is not yet the granite figure

De Gaulle: Résistance Review

Antonin Baudry’s De Gaulle: Résistance is an ambitious, richly detailed historical epic that approaches the late General Charles de Gaulle’s wartime years with the seriousness and scale they demand. As the first part of a two-film story, the film is less interested in rushing from one famous event to another than in immersing the audience in the political and military complexities of the French Resistance. The result is a film that can occasionally feel heavy under the weight of its historical detail, but is ultimately an absorbing, carefully constructed portrait of a man attempting to keep the idea of a free France alive while fighting against those who
