Alain Gomis’ ‘Dao’ wins top prize at Valladolid Film Week

The Valladolid International Film Week, also known as Seminci, awarded its top prize, the Golden Spike for best film, to Alain Gomis’ Dao at the close of its 71st edition on Saturday (October 30). A drama and documentary hybrid by French-Senegalese writer-director Alain Gomis, Dao focuses on two ceremonial events that intertwine: a wedding in France and a funeral in Guinea-Bissau. Dao premiered in competition in Berlin. Its launch in Spain will be boosted by the €70,000 cash prize that comes with the Golden Spike, which goes to the film’s local distributor, Flamingo Films. Seminci’s Silver Spike went to Marine Atlan’s La Gradiva,

Valladolid Festival Prizes: Alain Gomis’ ‘Dao’ Wins Golden Spike, ‘La Gradiva’ Takes Silver

French-Senegalese filmmaker Alain Gomis’ “Dao,” an expansive family saga spanning Europe and Africa, was awarded the Golden Spike for best film at Spain’s 71st Valladolid International Film Festival (Seminci) while Marine Atlan’s acclaimed debut “La Gradiva” received the Silver Spike. Unfolding between a wedding in France and an ancestral memorial ceremony in Guinea-Bissau, Gomis’ three-hour film blurs fiction and documentary, gathering a sprawling cast of professional and non-professional performers to explore family ties, migration and the pull of inherited traditions. The international jury praised the film’s distinctive cinematic form, citing its use of rhythm, duration and movement to create an intimate yet immersive atmosphere. “Dao,” which world premiered in competition at Berlin, marks Gomis’ return to fiction features after “Félicité,” winner of the 2017 Berlinale Grand Jury Prize. Reviewing the new film, Variety’s Guy Lodge called it the director’s “most vibrantly expansive and accessible” work. The

‘Babel’: THR’s 2006 Review

On Oct. 27, 2006, Paramount unveiled Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel in theaters following its premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The feature, starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Gael Garcia Bernal, was nominated for seven Oscars at the 79th Academy Awards, including best picture. It walked away with one win, in the original score category. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below: Tense, relentless and difficult to watch at times, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel is an emotionally shattering drama in which a simple act of kindness leads to events that pierce our veneer of civilization and bring on the white noise of terror. Iñárritu and screen writer Guillermo Arriaga involve six families, most of them not known to one another, in four countries on three continents in their story of random fate and the perils of being unable to communicate. Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and
