Steve James Should Have Been One of Cinema’s Biggest Action Heroes — A New Restoration Shows Why

From the time he started working in movies as a stuntman in the 1970s, plying his trade in iconic films like “The Wiz,” “The Warriors,” and “Dressed to Kill,” Steve James had a dream: to become a major Black action star. And it should have happened — from his early role in James Glickenhaus’ deliciously nasty grindhouse flick “The Exterminator” and his series of collaborations with Cannon action auteur Sam Firstenberg to his memorable turns in William Friedkin‘s “To Live and Die in L.A.” and the Chuck Norris-Lee Marvin disaster extravaganza “Delta Force,” James was convincing, charismatic, and a fighter with grace and style. Unfortunately, James died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 41, just a little over 10 years after his career really started to get going. And his best performance, as a wrongly court-martialed Vietnam vet who helps the citizens of a rural Southern town take on

When Oscar costars collide: Will double supporting acting nominees from ‘One Battle After Another’ and ‘Sentimental Value’ split the vote?

The time has come once again to discuss one of the most contentious topics of awards season: vote-splitting. This year's Oscar nominations feature two films with double supporting acting nominees: One Battle After Another, with Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn; and Sentimental Value, with Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas. Will the dueling castmates cancel each other out? If not, what could propel one over the other? In the Academy's long history of pitting costars against each other, the results have been all over the map. Before we dig into the history, a caveat: Because the Academy has never (and likely will never) publicly released ballot totals, the idea of vote-splitting is purely academic.

A Heartbreaking Steven Spielberg Drama Was Based On A Banned Book

One of my favorite novels is Bohumil Hrabal's "Too Loud a Solitude," and it contains a line I think about every time I read something new: "My briefcase is full of books and that very night I expect them to tell me things about myself I don't know." For while the act of reading is looking inward at someone else's words on a printed page, great writing has the power to expand one's mind and perspective in almost limitless directions. Banning and burning books has the opposite effect, closing things off and denying other people the freedom to explore ideas and make their own minds up. Sadly, the contentious act of censoring books in the United States has a long and regrettable history reaching back as far as the first European settlers on the continent. One of the earliest examples was William Pynchon's "The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption
