James McAvoy confirms he had to melt a copy of the videogame Elder Scrolls

He was starring in a film with Anne Hathaway – and James McAvoy realised he had an Elder Scrolls addiction problem. 2007’s romantic drama Becoming Jane was one of the early breakthrough roles for James McAvoy. Co-starring Anne Hathaway, Julie Walters, James Cromwell and the late Dame Maggie Smith, it came off the back of a run of roles including The Last King Of Scotland, The Chronicles Of Narnia and the much-loved Starter for 10. His star was very much in the ascendancy. Anne Hathaway Still Can’t Shake Her Regrets About Playing Jane Austen in ‘Becoming Jane’

In the mid-2000s, Anne Hathaway was one of Hollywood’s fastest-rising stars. ‘The Princess Diaries’ had made her a household name, and she was eager to prove she could take on more serious, prestigious roles. That ambition led her to ‘Becoming Jane’, a 2007 period romance about the early life of Jane Austen and her rumored love for Thomas Lefroy, played by James McAvoy. Directed by Julian Jarrold and based on Jon Spence’s book ‘Becoming Jane Austen’, the film also featured Julie Walters, James Cromwell and Maggie Smith. Yet nearly 2 decades later, it remains the performance Hathaway struggles to make peace with. Speaking to The Independent, the actress admitted

‘Verity’ Star Anne Hathaway Admits the Role She Still Can’t Forgive Herself For

Every actor has a performance they wish they could take back. For Anne Hathaway, an Oscar winner with a résumé full of crowd-pleasers, that film is surprisingly one of her most prestigious early projects. Her regret over ‘Becoming Jane’ has resurfaced, and it says a lot about how hard it is to play a literary icon. Hathaway’s career took off in the early 2000s, largely thanks to her film debut in ‘The Princess Diaries’. Her turn as Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who discovers she belongs to a royal family, made her a global name. She returned to the role in the 2004 sequel and also appeared in ‘Ella Enchanted’ that same year.

‘Lets me believe in myself’: why Billy Elliot is my feelgood movie

The latest in our series of writers highlighting their most rewatched comfort films is a personal tribute to the inspirational British drama For me, feeling good isn’t about escape, it’s about confrontation. Staring the thing you truly care about in the eye and giving in to it. It’s about empowerment, courage, optimism. I’m a sucker for coming-of-age films, the idea of striving to be the person you want to be despite the circumstances around you, and no film hits home for me like Billy Elliot. The low-budget drama danced its way through cinema projectors and on to the screen in September 2000, a few weeks after my fourth birthday.
