Why watch this film?
One of the most anticipated and necessary films of 2020, 'M8: When Death Rescues Life' is yet another consistent work from filmmaker Jeferson De ('Bróder'). Here, he takes advantage of the prejudices and abuses of structural racism that takes Brazil by storm to talk about the routine of a black medical student, the only one in his class. Thus, seeing other black people only in the body of employees and in the figure of the bodies explored in anatomy class, he begins to be bothered by the social situation around him. It is a film with some saturations, mainly concerning the amount of topics and themes discussed in just over 80 minutes of duration. In addition, there is a didacticism that initially bothers. However, quickly, Jeferson De shows that this didacticism is still necessary. And, in the end, Jeferson and the very well interpreted protagonist by Juan Paiva ('Malhação: Viva a Diferença') move and make us reflect.

Running After
After surprising with the good 'M8: When Death Helps Life', filmmaker Jeferson De moves away from drama and embraces comedy with enthusiasm. In 'Correndo Atrás', the director tells the story, adapted from a book by comedian Hélio de la Peña, of Ventania (Ailton Graça), a middle-aged man who is still looking for his opportunity in life. And it comes when he meets Glanderson (Juan Paiva), a good soccer player who could be the promise of national football - and also of Ventania's life. Very Brazilian, the production succeeds in bringing a light film to the audience to watch on an afternoon to spend time with a story that could certainly be real in any Brazilian periphery. There is also the increase of Jeferson De having taken care to put, mainly, black professionals in front and behind the cameras, making the comedy one of the most diverse of the genre in Brazil. Good, fun, socially relevant. It is, finally, a pleasant surprise.
Doutor Gama
"Doctor Gama" is a historically important film. After all, despite the importance of lawyer Luiz Gama, a black man who freed slaves in 19th century Brazil, he is little known to the general public. An absurdity, a cowardice. Therefore, before we even talk about the movie itself, it is necessary to emphasize how the rescue promoted by director Jeferson De and the producers of the feature film is of utmost importance in history. That said, the feature is formal in its execution, as seen in the filmmaker's more recent productions, such as "M8". It tells the story in a clean way, with only one or two risks here and there, but without complicating the movie too much. It even reminds a bit of the national spirit biographical productions, such as "Divaldo": it has history, setting and script straight to the point, without delay. The absolute highlight is for the performance of César Mello ("A Glória e a Graça"), accurate as Gama, holding well even in the most mundane moments. With this, "Doctor Gama" is an important production, with its historical value. It could be a little more daring and creative, taking advantage of the power of Gama's story to create truly distinguished moments in the production. This does not happen, a pity. But it is worth watching the production, mainly to dive even deeper into this story that escapes us.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
