Why watch this film?
From the mind of Neill Blomkamp, of 'District 9' and 'Chappie', this horror movie tells the story of a young woman who must face demonic forces that have been unleashed due to an ancient feud involving a mother and her daughter. It's incredible how productions with demons usually bring family dramas as a backdrop. The supernatural side is already complicated, when family issues come into play then the situation only worsens. 'Demonic' is a well-thought-out horror and manages to be original within the arc of generic feature films that we already know. The narrative may not please many people, but it will certainly bring good entertainment to genre fans. Blomkamp's productions are usually at least interesting.

Typically, alien invasion stories in the cinema are told using strong tones of suspense, thriller, and horror. South African filmmaker Neill Blomkamp's "District 9" (from "Chappie") takes a different approach by using an alien plot to address prejudice, gentrification, migration, and apartheid. It's an uncomfortable movie that helps viewers immerse themselves in a believable fantasy reality that evokes different emotions and reminds us of some of the reactions "The Thing" produces. Sharlto Copley's (from "Hardcore: Mission Extreme") performance adds an even more dramatic and disturbing tone to the film, which doesn't shy away from delivering powerful (and sometimes blatant) messages to the audience. Great movie.
Gran Turismo
Danny Moore (Orlando Bloom, from Pirates of the Caribbean) is a Nissan marketing executive trying to make an ambitious project come to life: putting players of the simulator game that gives the movie its name into the real world, driving cars on a track. Despite this premise looking like marketing, Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) takes the story and focuses on the journey of Jann (Archie Madekwe), a British youngster who fights to be one of those selected to drive for real, and Jack (David Harbour, from Stranger Things), Jann's coach who doesn't take the obvious path and has great heart. The racing scenes are correct and, despite some visual slips, should impact the general audience. The best part is the chemistry between Madekwe and Harbour, which convinces as a totally unconventional racing duo that touches your heart.

The Nightman
The Nightman a dramatic thriller that explores the dangerous boundary between love and darkness. The story follows a young pregnant woman who begins to question the perfection of her boyfriend upon discovering his possible involvement in mysterious disappearances and murders, linked to his sleepwalking behavior. With praised performances and precise direction, the film delves into complex themes of relationships and personal dilemmas, keeping the audience engaged in its dark suspense.
Abigail
Abigail demonstrates why we should keep an eye on the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, especially when they have original material at their disposal (they also directed Scream 5 and 6, with mixed results). Abigail is a film that manages to balance the terror and tragedy of its characters with the absurdity of its premise, thanks to a clever script that plays with the conventions of vampire literature, careful direction, and a phenomenal cast (led by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens) that fully utilizes their roles. The plot follows a group of kidnappers tasked with a delicate job: to kidnap a millionaire's daughter for ransom. However, it all turns out to be a trap: beneath the guise of a 12-year-old girl, the victim is actually an ancient vampire who likes to play with her food. Like Ready or Not in its time, this film is self-aware, pushing its story and violence to the most absurd and fun limits without falling into self-parody. It won’t change the history of horror cinema, but it’s an excellent (and even stylish for a film of its genre, I dare say) choice for a fun time at the movies with friends.
28 Days Later
