Why watch this film?

"The Sopranos" is a timeless classic, a landmark among series that revolutionized the industry and paved the way for much of what came after. "Breaking Bad" for example wouldn't exist without "The Sopranos" - and as life imitates art, it's fun to think that, so many years later, the reverse is true and somehow "Breaking Bad" influences "The Sopranos". Yes, because if it weren't for the positive response to "El Camino", the movie spin-off of "Breaking Bad", probably "The Many Saints of Newark" would never have been developed. And here we are, almost 15 years later, revisiting the iconic character of James Gandolfini, Tony Soprano. The movie takes a savvy approach: since it is a prequel, it is not necessary for the viewer to have watched the original series, thus being able to introduce the character and attract a new generation of fans, and for the old ones, they will be at home being able to learn a little more about Tony's origin. It must be said that the movie does not have all the strength of the series, which is not surprising considering a context of 14 years of difference and a story that comes more as an homage than a real necessary addition. Still, it is full of positive points and should please fans for the simple possibility of revisiting, very well built. The cast is well formed, and we have the pleasure of seeing Ray Liotta (star of "Goodfellas") returning to a mafia movie. The great trump, however, is Michael Gandolfini. It is exciting and very powerful to see him embody the iconic role of his father, which in itself is worth the whole experience.

Plot summary

Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark's history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family's hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities and whose influence over his nephew will help make the impressionable teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we'll later come to know: Tony Soprano.
