B.J. Novak's (Ryan from The Office) debut as a director and screenwriter is an absurdist comedy crime thriller, a curious combination. Vengeance follows a journalist (Novak) who decides to travel to Texas to investigate the death of a girl he was seeing, as the cause of her passing was declared an overdose, but some suspect she was murdered. There aren't many surprises, but it's a comedy that ingeniously tackles issues of American society in the era of "post-truth," like misinformation and blind trust in conspiracy theories. If you like crime thrillers but want something out of the ordinary, this movie is for you.
