Why watch this film?
Based on Priscilla Presley's own memoirs, this film couldn't fit better into Sofia Coppola's filmography (Lost in Translation): we witness the boredom, amid unsatisfying privilege, of a woman emotionally abandoned by her partner or loved ones. In this case, that woman is the wife of one of the greatest myths of American popular culture: Elvis Presley. Emphasis on "myth": Priscilla's memoirs and Coppola's film show the lesser-known side of the star, through the experience of an underage girl who, over time, discovered that behind the voice, talent, and fame was a volatile, drug-addicted, and violent man. If it's about getting a complete view of the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Priscilla is the perfect counterpart to Baz Luhrmann's flamboyant Elvis, and the lead performances by Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi are impeccable.

Lost in Translation
Lost in Translation, the highly successful movie by filmmaker Sofia Coppola which won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture, is certainly deserving of its accolades. Starring Bill Murray (Ghostbusters) and a young Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), the film captures feelings of loneliness, sadness, isolation, and that strange sense of not belonging. This is all seen through the relationship between Murray and Johansson's characters, who are spending time in Tokyo, Japan. He is a fading actor who takes a job doing a commercial for a drink. She is the "model wife" of a photographer. From this emptiness, the director plays with the possibilities of meetings and partings, joys and sorrows, losses and recoveries. It is worth noting that the film, on some levels, dialogues with Spike Jonze's drama Her, as Coppola and Jonze were married at the time and the director has said more than once that she was a "model wife" - the same situation as Scarlett Johansson's character. Watching the two films back-to-back is a great experience.
The Beguiled
The remake of the 1971 movie, which was based on the homonymous book by Thomas P. Cullinan and now directed by Sofia Coppola - who won the Best Director Award at the Cannes Film Festival 2017 - has many merits. It focuses on women empowerment while delivering impeccable performances and a seductive yet brutal Colin Farrel. One of its flaws is the so-called 'whitewashing' - black characters from the book, slaves, were ignored in the adaptation, while Kirsten Dunst's character was supposed to be mixed-raced. Recommended for those looking for stories of strong women, but also for those already familiar with the director's rhythm.
On the Rocks
Sofia Coppola shines again with the script and direction of 'On the Rocks', a comedy about relationships, aging, and the father-daughter relationship. The filmmaker repeats her partnership with Bill Murray, who shows a better performance than in 'Lost in Translation', the same applies to the story. 'On the Rocks' discusses various themes and puts the female figure in the spotlight. We can say that Coppola made her most vulnerable and sensitive film, showing the internal conflicts of the modern woman - who is dealing with problems in marriage and in relation to her own identity. Rashida Jones is the protagonist and, as in almost all her films, she is impeccable, almost magnetic in her performance. Another positive point is the soundtrack, Sofia Coppola always hits the mark in this regard. 'On The Rocks' is a delicious comedy and quite charming.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
