A charming Norwegian animation with characters crafted by Carter Goodrich (known for his work on major films like Brave and Coco from Pixar, Despicable Me from Illumination, Sony's Hotel Transylvania, and DreamWorks' Shrek, among others). The story of Just Super follows young Hedvig, a video game enthusiast and athletically challenged girl, tasked with the enormous mission of inheriting her father's role as the superhero Super Lion. Lauded by the young audience at the Toronto Film Festival, this is a heartwarming family film that competes admirably with major releases, largely due to a storyline that imparts a message to children about the responsibility that comes with power.

Plot summary

Here, director Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) filters the conventions of these films through a black lens, with a cast led by names like Lakeith Stanfield, Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, Omar Sy, and Anna Diop, among others. The Book of Clarence follows a man who, aspiring to be someone in life, decides to capitalize on the popularity of Jesus of Nazareth for his own benefit. Through the biblical cliché, the film examines issues such as black identity, the distortion of faith by organized religions, and the very sense of goodness and compassion. It's somewhat uneven but nonetheless entertaining.
