Why watch this film?
Todd Haynes is a filmmaker who enjoys telling stories that stir the core of society, poking at what is most rotten, ridiculous, and unexpected. And it's precisely this kind of story that we follow in May December a film about an actress (Natalie Portman) who meets the woman (Julianne Moore) she will portray in her next film. The reason for making a film about her? A few years ago, she had a relationship with a much younger, underage boy, who is now her husband (Charles Melton). From there, we follow a plot with three layers: Haynes's observations on how cinema exploits tragedies; how society views a relationship like this, born from a crime; and how society itself also descends upon these people, forcing relationships that don't exist. It's a mature, intense film with outstanding performances (Portman, Moore, and especially Melton shine here), reaffirming Haynes (of Carol and Far from Heaven) as one of the most provocative filmmakers in action, poking at American society.

Wonderstruck
From the same director of 'Carol', Todd Haynes, this is an adaptation of Brian Selznick's book 'Wonderstruck: The Museum of Wonders', the same author of 'The Invention of Hugo'. It is a creative and fantasy-filled movie, showing how the world looks through the eyes of children - who have hearing impairments in the story. With that said, the soundtrack is essential in 'Breathless'. This is a great movie with great performances from both children and adults, such as Julianne Moore, Michelle Williams and Amy Hargreaves.
Carol
"Carol" reconstructs New York in the 1950's incredibly well, from the scene details to the prejudice that punishes two women for expressing their love for each other. Cate Blanchett is extraordinary in her performance, bringing all the flirting, romance and drama that the film requires.
Dark Waters
After a phase of experimentalism, with films like 'Breathless' and 'I'm Not There', filmmaker Todd Haynes dives back into raw and painful reality with 'Dark Waters'. Here, he tells the story of a chemical company that contaminated a small town - and subsequently, the entire planet - without ever admitting its mistakes. With a powerful performance by Mark Ruffalo (the Hulk from 'Avengers: Endgame'), the film brings an intense pessimism about the reality of large corporations and their impact on society, often with government and legal backing. Even though there are no energetic moments in the plot, it is hard not to be impacted and a bit shocked by everything that is shown there. It is Haynes' best film since 'Carol' and 'Far From Heaven', throwing the viewer into a hurricane of events that poke at the capitalist system we all live in.
The Velvet Underground
Todd Haynes (‘Carol’, ‘Far From Heaven’), acclaimed director and one of the most daring currently in the extension of his filmography, chooses to film his first non-fiction movie, ‘The Velvet Underground’, a documentary about his favorite band. Knowing a little more about Todd Haynes or Velvet Underground, it is perfectly understandable the director's appreciation, and the choice of this partnership which is both eccentric and fits like a glove. This irreverent combination takes us on a journey to New York's musical scene of the 60s, as well as the entire history of the concept band, Velvet Underground, in a highly sensory narrative. It is not necessary to know the band to appreciate the documentary, it delivers the context worked out in detail. It is a documentary for lovers of cinema and what it can offer in its potential, made with love and knowledge, in the only way that could capture all the essence of its main object.

Underdog
In its effort to raise awareness about the precarious social reality of certain sectors of the population, Mexican cinema tends to fall into miserabilism (or so-called "poverty porn"), whether in documentaries or fiction. The quest of Mexican cinema for new creative and narrative horizons is ongoing, and in the case of Underdog (Correr para vivir), director and co-writer Gerardo Dorantes opts for what, in its conventions, is an action and crime thriller extrapolated to the context of the Rarámuri (or Tarahumara) indigenous people of northern Mexico, famous for their running tradition (and their extraordinary talent for it). The plot follows two brothers: Omero (Vladimir Rivera), who dreams of being a runner; and Capó (Manuel Cruz Vivas), who is more talented but also troubled. Both are dragged into a life of service to the drug trade when Capó, in an attempt to provide for his pregnant girlfriend, fails in a cocaine delivery. To be honest, it's a good attempt to steer Mexican cinema towards other directions that are not the typical exploitation of social dramas or anthropological documentaries. However, the film ends up falling into the same vices, representing Rarámuri culture from a superficial and idealized exoticism, creating entertainment from a real social context with little sensitivity.
Downtown Owl
'Downtown Owl' - Searching for a break from her cosmopolitan life in Milwaukee, Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe), arrives in the closeknit Reagan-era town of Owl, North Dakota for a one-semester high school teaching job. But when the small town turns out to be a wonderland of second-string poets, smoldering Marlboro Men, and a social hierarchy that echoes high school, Julia doesn't know if she's come to town to get away from home or to find it. Ed Harris, Vanessa Hudgens, Henry Golding, and Finn Wittrock also star in this Great Plains dark dramedy directed by Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Based on the novel by Chuck Klosterman.
