Damsel, a Netflix exclusive film, has the vibe of almost all the productions Millie Bobby Brown has ventured into after Stranger Things: uncompromising films to watch and enjoy. Here, she plays a young woman who thinks she's going to marry a perfect prince. However, the fairy tale dream is shattered when she is thrown into a hole where she discovers that she won't be a princess after all, but rather a sacrifice to appease a bloodthirsty dragon. Trying to survive long enough until someone can save her, she soon realizes that no one is coming and she'll need to save herself. It's a fun survival film, with just the right amount of fantasy, and it helps to change the eternal figure of the damsel in distress – who now doesn't need a prince by her side.

Here, director Jeymes Samuel (The Harder They Fall) filters the conventions of these films through a black lens, with a cast led by names like Lakeith Stanfield, Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, Omar Sy, and Anna Diop, among others. The Book of Clarence follows a man who, aspiring to be someone in life, decides to capitalize on the popularity of Jesus of Nazareth for his own benefit. Through the biblical cliché, the film examines issues such as black identity, the distortion of faith by organized religions, and the very sense of goodness and compassion. It's somewhat uneven but nonetheless entertaining.
