Why watch this film?

Nicholas Winton's story must be one of the most incredible and enlightening tales about the power of compassion and the human spirit in the context of World War II and the Holocaust. One Life begins in 1988 with Winton (played by Anthony Hopkins) reflecting on his past, gradually revealing, through flashbacks, his humanitarian actions to save refugee children in Czechoslovakia from the imminent Nazi invasion in 1938 (portrayed here by Johnny Flynn). Without straying an inch from the conventions of dramas of its kind, the film manages to move audiences with its touching story and powerful performance by Hopkins, reminding us of the importance of keeping alive the stories of these humanitarian acts, while also raising questions about whether we need yet another addition to the long list of Holocaust films.
