Why watch this film?

You may not be familiar with the Homeless World Cup, an annual soccer tournament where teams of homeless individuals compete by country, aiming to raise awareness and generate profound changes in the situation of homeless or marginalized people living in poverty. Directed by Thea Sharrock (Me Before You), The Beautiful Game tells a fictional story of redemption and perseverance surrounding this tournament. The plot follows Vinny (Micheal Ward, Empire of Light), a man who, after showing promise as a soccer player, lost his way and now lives in his car. But his talent earns him a spot on the English team, coached by Mal (Bill Nighy, Living), where he must learn to be part of a group. It's the typical inspiring and heartwarming sports story, but thanks to the great performances of its cast - including Mexican actress Cristina Rodlo (The Terror) and Italian actress Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) - the film avoids falling into cheesiness despite its clichés. At least it feels more sincere than Next Goal Wins.
