Why watch this film?

There is an inevitable exploitative spirit in a commercial biopic about any tragic figure. And given the tragedy of Amy Winehouse, Back to Black cannot be the exception. Titled after the singer's most iconic album, the film directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) follows the expected formula of a movie of its kind: we witness the rise to fame of its protagonist (impressively portrayed by Marisa Abela), until the creation of what would be her second - and last - studio album. To be honest, the documentary Amy, by Asif Kapadia, has much more to offer for those familiar with the singer's life and work. However, as a first approach, Back to Black is satisfactory, mainly due to the work of its actors
