Why watch this film?
After more serious dramas such as The Empty Box and El reino de Dios, Mexican filmmaker Claudia Sainte-Luce returns to the more ironic and melancholic tone of her best-known film, the wonderful The Amazing Catfish (Los insólitos peces gato). Now with a script by Adriana Pelusi (Control Z), the director immerses herself in the frustrations of a world governed by the conformity to expectations, broken illusions and emotional immaturity. Love and Mathematics (Amor y matemáticas), selected at the Toronto Film Festival, is the story of Billy (Roberto Quijano), who was a pop star in an old boy band, but who now lives in the north of Mexico, married, with a baby , frustrated by monotony and fruitless businesses, burying his old glories. However, he soon meets Mónica (Diana Bovio), his new neighbor and a former fan of his band, who awakens feelings in him that he thought he had forgotten. Without naive idealisms, the film ironizes the destinies, decisions and resignations of its protagonists. A funny – and deeply melancholic – comedy that opens questions about the values and ideals to which we aspire in life.

The Peasants
The Peasants is an animated film by the same directors of Loving Vincent, using the same innovative technique, which could be described as "oil-painted rotoscopy". Based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel The Peasants (1904) by Władysław Reymont, it's a tale of desire and revenge told in four episodes, one for each season of the year. The story, set in Poland at the turn of the 20th century, follows a young peasant woman who wreaks havoc by marrying an older, wealthy man, whose son also desires her, despite being married. It is a powerful and bleak, although conventional tale about violence and misogyny, somewhat overshadowed by its beautiful and prodigious visual execution.
