Now You See Me 2
After an extremely competent first movie, the 'Now You See Me' franchise gained an unexpected grandiosity. This second chapter of the story of criminal magicians takes place in more countries, has even more elaborate tricks and even more characters -- even Daniel Radcliffe, the eternal Harry Potter, joined the story. On the one hand, there is a general swelling of the story, which ends up sounding even more miraculous and artificial than the first movie. Those who like to believe what they are watching will be disappointed, no doubt. However, those who embark on the madness of director Jon M. Chu (‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’) will have fun with some memorable scenes, such as the good sequence of a letter being exchanged between the magicians. A movie to have fun with.

In the Heights
Adapted from the play 'In the Heights', the musical movie 'In the Heights' seems like a contemporary mix between 'Hamilton' and 'Do the Right Thing'. After all, on one side, there is all the musicality of Lin-Manuel Miranda, who knows how to combine musical styles, always with a hint of rap and hip-hop, bringing a modern force to what he wants to tell -- and creating instant hits, like 'In the Heights', 'Carnaval del Barrio' and the beautiful 'Paciencia y Fé'. On the other side, pulling the obvious reference from Spike Lee's feature, there is the story of a Latin community going through a tough process of gentrification -- which is when real estate speculation takes precedence over the social importance of a space, a neighborhood or a city. From there, we dive into the beautiful story of Usnavi (Anthony Ramos), owner of a bodega who pursues his dreams with determination: to return to the Dominican Republic and win Vanessa (Melissa Barrera). There is also the girl who returns frustrated from college, the radio host, the lady who serves as grandmother to everyone ... There are several stories, all of them natural and without artificiality that some Broadway adaptations bring to the cinema. There are problems, yes, such as the exaggerated duration of more than 2h20 and the blatant lack of black representation in the Latin community. Still, however, the sunny tone of the production, the good music and striking performances (mainly from Barrera and the experienced Olga Merediz) help 'In the Heights' to raise the overall quality of the production. Fans of musicals in general, and especially of 'Hamilton', should get excited.

The Nature of Love
Sophia, a 40-year-old philosophy professor, has been in a stable and conventional marriage to Xavier for a decade. From gallery openings to endless dinner parties, ten years have flown by. When Sophia meets Sylvain, a craftsman renovating the couple’s new country house, Sophia’s world is turned upside down. The two begin a passionate affair fueled by their irresistible physical connection. However, Sophia comes from a wealthy family of intellectuals, while Sylvain comes from a working-class family of manual workers. As they get to know each other on a deeper level, Sophia begins to question her own values after abandoning herself to her great romantic impulses. Director Monia Chokri delivers a smart and sexy romantic comedy, infusing it with spiky energy and fresh perspective, upending genre and gender conventions.

Goyo
Goyo is a romantic film directed by Argentine filmmaker Marcos Carnevale (known for movies like Elsa & Fred). It's about a museum guide with Asperger's syndrome (Nicolás Furtado) who unexpectedly falls in love with the museum's new security guard (Nancy Dupláa), an older woman disillusioned with love. The story is appreciated for its touches of humor and the portrayal of a romantic relationship for a neurodivergent person (in this case, on the autism spectrum). However, the story is somewhat superficial and melodramatic. You'll enjoy it if you're looking for a tender, uncomplicated romance to enjoy with a partner.

Jeanne du Barry
Jeanne du Barry is a French period drama, directed and starring Maïwenn (known for The Fifth Element), about the courtesan and the last official mistress of King Louis XV (Johnny Depp) of France. The film chronicles her life from her childhood and formative years as a servant's daughter, to her rise in French society through sex, alliances, and strategic marriages. Although well-crafted, it is a very conventional drama that, in its making, invites not very favorable comparisons with Barry Lyndon. While Kubrick's classic manages to be a very subtle satire, Maïwenn's film takes itself too seriously. This, considering its representation of the female gender and the backgrounds of its two main stars, not only does not help but invites questioning the purpose of telling this story, with so little hope for its protagonist. You will enjoy it if you like period dramas with sumptuous costumes, or if you are an avid follower of Johnny Depp.
