Why watch this film?
Do you ever get that feeling of nostalgia for the good old days or feel like you were born in the wrong era? Well, 'Midnight in Paris' is a movie entirely based on this idea. It's one of Woody Allen's best films (Oscar winner for best screenplay), and it has many of his director trademarks: a writer struggling with the creative process, a love for Europe, complicated romantic relationships and nostalgia for old idealisms. The cast led by Owen Wilson is phenomenal, accompanied by other great names like Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hiddleston, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody and Léa Seydoux, among many others.

Café Society
This light-hearted comedy, with Woody Allen's signature, might not be the director's most inspiring movie, but it is filled with nostalgia and has a motivating vibe to it. If you need to feel better after watching a film, this is definitely the ideal choice.
![Vicky Cristina Barcelona](https://media.filmelier.com/images/filmes/thumb/vicky-cristina-barcelona13252.jpeg)
Vicky Cristina Barcelona
With romantic entanglements between multiple people, 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona' is a Woody Allen film that explores feelings in relationships that begin and end. The filmmaker's signature refined humor is also present in this feature through the excellent performances of its cast, in particular two of his muses: Scarlett Johansson and Penélope Cruz.
![Bananas](https://media.filmelier.com/tit/vB3RjD/thumb/bananas_60kHLnI.jpeg)
Bananas
Directed, co-written and starring Woody Allen long before his 'Annie Hall' days, 'La locura está de moda' (better known by its original title of 'Bananas') is an often incoherent but highly entertaining comedy thanks to its biting elements of political satire. The result is like the Cuban Revolution by way of the Marx Brothers.

The Purple Rose of Cairo
Smart, light and fun, 'The Purple Rose of Cairo' is one of Woody Allen’s most overlooked gems but also one of the most captivating. First of all, this is a story about us, the viewers, and the reasons why we love movies. Winner of the Golden Globe and BAFTA for its incredible screenplay.
![Annie Hall](https://media.filmelier.com/images/filmes/thumb/annie-hall20400.jpeg)
Annie Hall
Among Woody Allen's enormous filmography, 'Annie Hall: Two Strange Lovers' still stands as the crown jewel. To this day it is still considered the mold for great romantic comedies, and in its time it brought freshness to the genre by honestly presenting issues such as insecurity, vulnerability, and sex. Annie's role, written specifically by Allen for her, is one of the most iconic of the legendary actress, who won an Oscar for this movie (which also won awards for best picture, best director, and best screenplay).
![Wonder Wheel](https://media.filmelier.com/tit/S1l12o/thumb/wonder-wheel_PHR2v1A.jpeg)
Wonder Wheel
The merits of 'Wonder Wheel' lie in its beautiful period reconstruction, in a drama that tries to escape from humor to tell a different story of love and passion, full of melancholy and modesty. This tempered with a beautiful performance by Kate Winslet ('The Reader', 'Titanic'). Still, the Woody Allen here is far from the Allen of 'Annie Hall', for example, with the director more struggling to keep everything together than being the leader of harmony - which is a pity, although still an attraction. In addition to Kate, the cast includes names like Justin Timberlake ('The Social Network'), Jim Belushi ('K-9: A Cop for a Dog') and Juno Temple ('Atonement').

A Rainy Day in New York
Woody Allen, the New York filmmaker (‘Annie Hall’, ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’) returns with a cast of new faces in a romantic comedy very typical of his style, full of multiple plots about love and existential crises adorned with clever dialogues. Okay, ‘A Rainy Day in New York’ may not be a masterpiece in the prolific filmography of the filmmaker, but it is quite entertaining and much due to a charismatic cast that includes young talents like Elle Fanning (‘Maleficent’), Timothée Chalamet (‘Call Me By Your Name’) and Selena Gomez (‘Spring Breakers’), as well as veterans like Diego Luna (‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’) and Jude Law (‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’).
![Irrational Man](https://media.filmelier.com/tit/JodLvI/thumb/irrational-man_I0nkxLU.jpeg)
Irrational Man
Joaquin Phoenix (‘Her’, ‘Joker’) and Emma Stone (‘La La Land’) meet in a Woody Allen (‘Midnight in Paris’) movie. Even though Allen is far from his best days, 'Irrational Man' delivers a dramedy about a love triangle that takes dark paths. The academic atmosphere and the cynical look that the film brings are noteworthy - in addition to the performances of the aforementioned actors.

Magic in the Moonlight
After the success of 'Midnight in Paris', Woody Allen returned to 1920s France to tell a charming romantic comedy, albeit formulaic. The script is full of classic romance added to the filmmaker's classic humor, with good performances from the protagonists Colin Firth ('The King's Speech') and Emma Stone ('La La Land') - although there is a lack of chemistry between them. Recommended for the most romantic hearts.
![Blue Jasmine](https://media.filmelier.com/images/filmes/thumb/blue-jasmine51585.jpeg)
Blue Jasmine
Cate Blanchett in one of her most unbearable, yet irresistible roles of her career. In this Woody Allen comedy, the actress won the Oscar for Best Actress in 2014 and also the Golden Globe and the BAFTA. 'Blue Jasmine' has clever dialogues – full of irony and critiques of New York’s high society – making it into a drama that can be funny as well. Other than Blanchett, Sally Hawkins is another incredibly charismatic character that steals many scenes (she was nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress).
![Husbands and Wives](https://media.filmelier.com/tit/ppX0RB/thumb/husbands-and-wives_sm9wq0Y.jpeg)
Husbands and Wives
Frequently cited as one of the best films in Woody Allen's long filmography (which is saying something), this movie is a romantic comedy with a darker subtext and brutally honest moments. 'Husbands and Wives' centers around two married couples: one that has decided to get divorced, and another that starts to question themselves after hearing the news. In true Ingmar Bergman fashion (one of Allen's greatest influences), this movie explores, sometimes brutally, the nature and truths of romantic relationships of its time, with a cast led by Allen himself, his then-wife Mia Farrow, plus Sydney Pollack, Juliette Lewis, Judy Davis, Blythe Danner and Liam Neeson.
![Rifkin's festival](https://media.filmelier.com/tit/yeT8tt/thumb/rifkins-festival_gMigLN0.jpeg)
Rifkin's festival
Despite all the controversy surrounding Woody Allen's name, the filmmaker returns with 'Rifkin's Festival'. Again in the format of a romantic comedy, the director explores the subject that made him famous: love relationships. In the plot, actor Wallace Shawn plays Mort Rifkin, a writer and film historian who accompanies his wife Sue, a press officer played by Gina Gershon, to Spain for the San Sebastian Festival. In the plot, Sue gets involved with a film director and Mort enters into a spiral of neuroses about his marriage and himself. Wallace Shawn is impeccable in the movie, extremely charismatic. Clearly this character would have been played by Woody Allen in the past, but Shawn is much more captivating. 'Rifkin's Festival' is a typical Allen comedy and fulfills its function very well in the genre.

![Outsider Girls](https://media.filmelier.com/tit/cRSp4H/thumb/outsider-girls_gfUGunI.jpeg)
Outsider Girls
Outsider Girls (original Spanish title: Las demás) is the feature film debut of Chilean filmmaker Alexandra Hyland as both director and screenwriter, and its art direction, music, editing, and staging, as well as its context and themes, embody a spirit that can only be described as "punk." The plot follows two best friends from university, whose lives are turned upside down when one of them becomes pregnant. Together, they embark on a quest to obtain an abortion in a country where it is still illegal. This is a great comedy that, in a carefree tone, without prejudice but also without concessions, highlights the hypocrisies of social, cultural, and political life in Chile, echoing experiences in other regions of Latin America.
![Problemista](https://media.filmelier.com/tit/mc4yPG/thumb/problemista_fqYJkEg.jpeg)
Problemista
Directed, written, and starred by Salvadoran comedian Julio Torres (Los Espookys), Problemista is a comedy that presents an absurd premise and doesn't worry about its credibility, and instead embraces its ridiculousness and runs with it. Set in an unspecified time in New York, Álex (Torres) aspires to be a toy inventor at Hasbro, with ideas as absurd as Barbies with crossed fingers or Cabbage Patch dolls with cellphones. To make ends meet, he works at a cryogenization clinic that freezes patients to wake up in the future (although there's no certainty that such technology will exist). When he is fired, he takes a job as an assistant to the neurotic Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton at her finest), who harbors the unreal idea of curating an exhibition of her artist husband's paintings, one of the frozen patients. With a production design that indulges in camp (closer to Roger Waters than to Pedro Almodóvar), using cheap costumes and ridiculous digital special effects, Torres builds a surreal and amusing atmosphere that satirizes the twisted difficulties of living in the United States (especially for Latin immigrants), the banal and stupid egocentrism of the cultural elites, and the absurdity of corporatism. Its eccentricity may repel some, but if you approach it on these terms, you'll leave the cinema having seen something truly unique.
