Why watch this film?
"Separation" directed by William Brent Bell is a horror/mystery and thriller movie that tells the story of a little girl who finds comfort in her artist father and the ghost of her deceased mother. However, the film fails to deliver a compelling plot and relies heavily on formulaic horror tropes. Critics have described it as a "lifeless divorce drama cosplaying as a horror film" and "a disjointed mess." While the movie starts with a promising setup, it lacks the necessary scares and fails to keep the audience engaged. The cast, including Violet McGraw, Brian Cox, and Rupert Friend, delivers decent performances, but they are not enough to save the movie. Overall, "Separation" is a forgettable horror film that fails to live up to its potential. If you are looking for a genuinely scary movie, this one is not for you.

Plot summary
Eight-year-old Jenny leads a lonely but imaginative life, surrounded by puppets based on the works of her artist father. But when her mother is tragically killed in a hit-and-run and her grandfather sues for custody, the puppets and other frightening characters suddenly start coming to life. At first, Jenny is the only person who believes they're real, putting everyone's lives in danger.

Brahms: The Boy II
A family moves to a small village in England - and as with most horror movies - they are unaware of the macabre past of the mansion they are going to live in. The sequel to the 2016 movie, which despite its clichés manages to be an interesting thriller due to its unexpected ending. Now we have 'Brahms: The Boy II' which draws from the same water as the first movie, but ends up failing in its conclusion. The plot has an acceptable, cohesive development and good moments of tension. However, this sequel ends up taking away the charm of the original movie precisely by modifying its differential with this new story.
Orphan: First Kill
In 2009, the movie 'Orphan' became one of the biggest horror movie successes, mainly due to its creative and unexpected twist involving the physical condition of the protagonist and villain Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). The character's backstory was brought to the big screen years later, in 2022, with the movie 'Orphan: First Kill'. Here, director William Brent Bell ('The Boy II') tries to patch up holes left by the original film, explaining more about Esther's origin story, where that name came from, and, of course, how she ended up in an orphanage. Lord of Misrule
A horror film inspired by ancient rural legends of Europe, Lord of Misrule tells the story of a little girl, daughter of a reverend in a small town, who disappeared during the harvest festival of the region. The big problem is that it is not a common disappearance: everything indicates that she was taken by the forest demon that destroys crops and that is scared away, during the festival, by the strange Lord of Chaos. From there, director William Brent Bell (from the eerie Orphan 2) plays with this folklore creating an absolutely atmospheric film, which depends a lot on the viewer being immersed in the environment to embark on the story. The film slips quite a bit at the end (recalling what also happened with the sequel to Orphan), but it shows how Brent Bell has the potential to explore new universes, in this mix of Ari Aster with folk-religious plots and strongly skimming with The Wicker Man. It's a pity that it could be better, but still, it's a breath of fresh air in a sea of increasingly similar and generic horror films.

The Nightman a dramatic thriller that explores the dangerous boundary between love and darkness. The story follows a young pregnant woman who begins to question the perfection of her boyfriend upon discovering his possible involvement in mysterious disappearances and murders, linked to his sleepwalking behavior. With praised performances and precise direction, the film delves into complex themes of relationships and personal dilemmas, keeping the audience engaged in its dark suspense.
Abigail
Abigail demonstrates why we should keep an eye on the director duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, especially when they have original material at their disposal (they also directed Scream 5 and 6, with mixed results). Abigail is a film that manages to balance the terror and tragedy of its characters with the absurdity of its premise, thanks to a clever script that plays with the conventions of vampire literature, careful direction, and a phenomenal cast (led by Mexican actress Melissa Barrera and Dan Stevens) that fully utilizes their roles. The plot follows a group of kidnappers tasked with a delicate job: to kidnap a millionaire's daughter for ransom. However, it all turns out to be a trap: beneath the guise of a 12-year-old girl, the victim is actually an ancient vampire who likes to play with her food. Like Ready or Not in its time, this film is self-aware, pushing its story and violence to the most absurd and fun limits without falling into self-parody. It won’t change the history of horror cinema, but it’s an excellent (and even stylish for a film of its genre, I dare say) choice for a fun time at the movies with friends.
28 Days Later
