Why watch this film?
Supernatural horror movies with demonic themes abound, so it's always refreshing to present a different approach. That's what The Vigil achieves, a frightening horror movie with an atmosphere based on Jewish demonology. The story follows a man who has left his insular religious community, but is contacted by his rabbi to be the "Shomer" (the person who watches over the corpse of a deceased person) of one of the community members. However, as he begins his vigil, he soon realizes that something is very wrong with the deceased. While it isn't a game-changing movie, it is one of those proposals that makes the most of its small budget, achieving better results than many other movies of its kind.

Firestarter
In the 1980s, Stephen King was not doing well. The American author was going through the most turbulent period of his life, abusing alcohol and heavy drugs -- no wonder, the author has already said in his book 'On Writing' that the decade is a blur. He doesn't even remember the books he wrote. These are works like 'Cujo', 'Christine', 'The Cemetery', 'It: The Thing' and, precisely, 'Firestarter', a work adapted into 'Chamas da Vingança'. The film, which has another version from 1984, tells the story of a little girl (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) who, just like a mutant from the X-Men universe, has the power to create fire. It is, as the title of the book in Portuguese says, an incendiary. The parents (Zac Efron and Sydney Lemmon) do everything they can to try to prevent the child from hurting themselves or hurting others around them. But it doesn't help: she is growing up and, little by little, losing the ability to control this powerful gift. It is a simple plot and faithfully adapts King's book -- and that's the problem. At this time when he was immersed in addiction, he had an extremely irregular career. There are brilliant books, like 'It: The Thing', and others without much strength and without story, like 'The Werewolf Hour' and 'Firestarter'. It's not a bad book, but it fails to be very rushed (127 pages!) and for not having a very well defined dramatic arc. However, there is an evident success in 'Chamas da Vingança' and that should excite fans of 1980s horror cinema: director Keith Thomas ('The Vigil') brings, whenever possible, a kitsch air to the production, very eighties, and which is reinforced by the brilliant soundtrack signed, among others, by John Carpenter. Could it be better? No doubt. Could it scare more, excite more. But this way, 'Chamas da Vingança' looks like a time capsule that, you can risk, can become cult with the decades -- just like the movie with Drew Barrymore.

The Exorcism
The Exorcism marks the second film featuring star Russell Crowe in an exorcism role within a year—the other being the fun and carefree The Pope's Exorcist. Here, however, Crowe isn't exactly an exorcist but an actor playing this common type of character in a horror film. Marked by filming delays, interrupted during the pandemic and resumed four years later, the feature attempts to play with the metanarrative of the proposal and how actors relate to their characters, making brief comments on how the stories they portray can seep into the lives of the actors themselves. It is far (very far!) from a perfect film, with a broken rhythm and a glaring lack of depth. However, it can still be entertaining—despite all the parental drama—to watch Russell Crowe once again portray this character battling demons.

Run Rabbit Run
Loss and family trauma have been fertile themes in horror in recent years, with films like The Babadook and Relic. Understandably, similar themes can become tiresome, which could be said about Run Rabbit Run. The film follows a fertility doctor (Sarah Snook, Succession), whose seven-year-old daughter (Lily LaTorre) begins to exhibit strange behaviors that mimic those of a deceased family member. The movie builds tension around this mystery, gradually revealing the events that led to the past tragedy. Its lack of novelty is compensated by a genuinely tense and terrifying atmosphere, with strong performances from Snook and debutante Lily LaTorre.
