Lara Croft: Tomb Raider
Angelina Jolie embodies the great video game heroine in 'Lara Croft: Tomb Raider', one of the biggest box office successes with a female lead in an action movie. Jolie, who was on a roll with 'The Bone Collector' and 'Girl Interrupted', fit the role perfectly, creating an intriguing and powerful character. Also noteworthy is Jon Voight, the actress's father, who plays the role of... Lara Croft's father in the story. The feature works very well as entertainment, so much so that it spawned a sequel, 'Tomb Raider: The Origin of Life'. However, it should be said: those looking for a story completely related to the video games may be disappointed. After all, director Simon West (of 'Con Air') gave his vision of the plot, which takes on more 'Indiana Jones'-like traits.
The General's Daughter
One of John Travolta's most interesting (and unknown!) roles, 'The General's Daughter' is an unusual military suspense. After all, the plot delves into the investigation of a crime committed at the highest level of the American army, directly involving politicians, military personnel and people connected to power. Travolta (who was highly rated at the time after 'Beyond the Red Line') consolidates himself as the moral reserve of the story, tracing an interesting confessional narrative with the public. It is not Simon West's best film (from 'Con Air' and 'Lara Croft'), but it should keep the viewer in their seat throughout its almost two hours with a plot that provokes, instigates and, above all, makes the viewer reflect.
Skyfire
Movies about volcanoes have long been considered a great hit for the 'Afternoon Session'. Who doesn't remember 'Dante's Inferno'? 'Skyfire' brings back this premise and takes it to another level. The production follows a researcher who wants to help people in a theme park built around a volcano that is about to erupt. It's a mix of 'Dante's Inferno' and 'Jurassic World: The Dinosaur World'. It's an action movie that is also recommended for those who like 'Rampage: Total Destruction', 'San Andreas Fault Earthquake' and 'Skyscraper'. To make 'Skyfire' even more interesting, all it needed was Dwayne Johnson in the cast.
The Expendables 2
Action, muscle and a good dose of adrenaline. The return of The Expendables is the return of Sylvester Stallone to his best years after playing the legendary 'Rocky Balboa'. Stallone leads the cast, mostly composed of muscular men from the 80s and 90s, among which stand out Jean-Claude Van Damme ('Universal Soldier'), Chuck Norris ('Walker, Texas Ranger') and... Arnold Schwarzenegger ('Terminator'). We also have the new generation of warriors led by Liam Hemsworth ('The Hunger Games'). A movie with lots of testosterone, rude, violent and brave. 'The Expendables 2' will not disappoint fans of high voltage action full of big stars.
Con Air
Along with 'Frenzy', and 'Lord of War', the movie 'Con Air' forms a kind of holy trinity of action and crime films from Nicolas Cage. After all, they are intense films, with fun premises, and have become firmly established in popular imagination. In the case of 'Con Air', filmmaker Simon West ('The Expendables 2') hits it out of the park with the story. In it, a prisoner on parole hitches a ride on a flight with the most dangerous criminals in the United States. From there, Cage, John Malkovich ('The Box'), John Cusack ('2012'), Steve Buscemi ('The Death of Stalin') and Danny Trejo ('Machete Kills') create chaos inside this plane and make it one of the most entertaining and exciting action films of all time. Not to mention Nicolas Cage's long hair, which has become a perpetual symbol among fans of the American star.
Action
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is the fifth and most exhausting (and exhausted) film in the franchise. Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (both of Kon-Tiki), the movie tries to bring back old characters, like Orlando Bloom’s Will Turner, while introducing new actors, such as Javier Bardem as Captain Salazar and Kaya Scodelario as Carina Smyth. The fact is, you can tell the veteran actors are tired: they seem less natural and less fun than in previous films. It's worth noting that during the shooting of this fifth chapter, Depp was experiencing the downfall of his career amidst his divorce from fellow actress Amber Heard. As a result, it’s a rather uneven conclusion, wrapping up some storylines while leaving others open for a sixth film that never materialized. At least there's still some fun to be had with the always inspired Geoffrey Rush and Bardem's seductive villain. A bittersweet end, but with a hint of what Pirates of the Caribbean once was.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
You could say that Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the movie almost no one asked for. After a trilogy of blockbusters far above average, Disney insisted on a fourth film in the saga. This time, Gore Verbinski steps aside to make way for director Rob Marshall, known for Into the Woods and Chicago — a filmmaker more accustomed to musicals than to movies like this. The cast sees the departure of Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, and Bill Nighy, while Penélope Cruz and Ian McShane join the story, accompanying Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) on a quest to find the Fountain of Youth, only to discover that Blackbeard (McShane) and his daughter (Cruz) are after it too. The film is far less exciting and entertaining than its predecessors, missing the familiar magic, though it still carries a spark. There’s some fun to be had in this world, which begins to carry a sense of urgency toward its end. The standout is Rush, portraying a less cynical and more emotional Barbossa.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is the near-perfect conclusion to the initial trilogy directed by Gore Verbinski, solidifying it as a true Disney blockbuster saga that knows how to play with Hollywood's cinematic symbols and meanings, and more importantly, respects moments of silence, character transformations, and is unafraid to bring closure. In this chapter, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) head East in search of a way to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) from Davy Jones' (Bill Nighy) purgatory, while the East India Trading Company uses the Flying Dutchman to dominate the seas and end piracy. The film works not only because of its energetic and urgent tone, but also for surprising audiences with unexpected alliances, like the partnership with Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush, always brilliant) and the Black Pearl pirates. With Hans Zimmer's iconic score, the film amplifies the terror surrounding Jones, who is not just a villain seeking revenge—there is something dramatic behind his now more fragile figure. It’s a film that thrills, moves, and gets you on your feet, especially during the final showdown filled with excellent special effects.
